Basking
in glorious sunshine, marred only by the occasional sprinkling of raindrops, Nottingham
Concert Band (Robert Parker) entertained the crowds in Newark in July when
it performed in the bandstand in the Castle grounds at the invitation of Newark
Town Council.
The
band drew on a diverse repertoire for the occasion, ranging from the seasonally
apt Don’t Rain on My Parade, Summertime and Over the Rainbow to spirited
marches like Rimmer's Slaidburn and Latham’s Brighton Beach. Contrasting
interludes were provided by a sensitive rendition of Elgar’s Nimrod and the
more spirited Copacabana, when the busy percussion section was brought to the
fore and augmented by young volunteers from the audience. The concert closed on
a patriotic note with an arrangement of Land of Hope & Glory.
