Band Defies The Weather

9 Feb 2009

The Croydon Symphonic Band, played their annual winter concert at the Fairfield Halls on Thursday 5th February. Band members struggled through the snow and ice that has recently hit the UK to attend their final rehearsal the day before, some walking up to 4 miles because local roads were still too icy to drive on.

However, bad weather was not going to stop them from performing at their best. The audience, who had also braved the icy conditions, was looking forward to an evening to remember and was not disappointed. With pieces by composers as diverse as Walter Piston, Paul Hart, Philip Sparke and John Williams, they were taken to the circus, went on a train ride, danced with witches and walked with dinosaurs.

Percussion was provided by two youth groups Funky Sticks and Sticks of Fire, the latter providing an excellent rendition of Tubular Bells. The two groups worked together to provide a surround sound experience for the audience, with drummers to their sides and behind them for the premier of Feel It! written by their musical director Chris Kimber.
